Welcome to Christ United Methodist Church Neptune Beach!

Greetings in the Name of Jesus Christ!
Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me." Matthew 19:21
During the last few months as we experienced Holy Week and Easter, individuals approached me about how the various sermons made them think and made them open their minds to what Christ went through as he walked toward the cross. Many mentioned that they had never fully comprehended the suffering and pain that was inflicted.
As I look back at the evolution of Christianity in America during the last half century, I wonder if we have become too comfortable in our faith. I recall hearing the story of a church member who, after hearing an empowering sermon, would go home and comment that it was a great sermon; but whenever a challenging sermon was presented, the member would comment that the sermon was not one of his favorites. We like to laugh at this little nugget, but I sometimes wonder it if isn't true.
We always like to be in situations where we are comfortable. It might be a familiar car, restaurant, or a favorite vacation spot. When we move outside of that comfort zone, we become more cautious, disapproving and  nervous. I believe the church is the same way. We love to hear the stories in the bible that affirm our faith. We love coming on Sunday and affirming that our Christian faith is perfect. However, we also know that if we only hear and do things we are comfortable with, we will cease to grow and become stagnant.
If we are truly honest with ourselves, Christianity is not meant to be comfortable. Throughout his ministry, Jesus constantly challenged the established thinking of Jewish leaders and promoted radical ideas of helping the sick, selling everything you owned, and loving your neighbor. These are messages that were not popular, but they are messages that show us what the Kingdom of God would look like today on Earth.
I encourage you to not become comfortable in your faith and always seek to grow. Embrace Jesus' entire ministry and not just that which makes you feel good. In doing so, just maybe we will begin to change the culture of the church for the present and future generations.
In Christ,
Pastor Chris
