God's Family Lighting the Way With Christian Love
Mission
We are a Godly community united:
For those who are troubled
And need counsel;
for those who have spiritual gifts
And need to serve;
For those who are fearful,
And need courage;
For those who are lonely
And need companionship;
For those who are lost
And need direction;
For those who are sinful,
And need forgiveness;
Christ Church
As a beacon
Lights the way
To Christ our Lord.
History of Christ United Methodist Church
In the summer of 1958, a small group of Methodists met regularly for prayer and bible study. As their numbers grew, they saw a need for another Methodist Church in the Beaches Community.
On December 1, 1958, a meeting was held and a definitive decision was made that the beaches would have a second Methodist Church. The first service was held on June 21, 1959 at the Atlantic Beach City Hall using hymnals donated by the Neptune Beach Baptist Church.
On July 9, 1959, Dr. Shelby Wilson, a retired Methodist minister, agreed to officially lead this group and they met with the District Superintendent. Regular Sunday morning services were held, eventually outgrowing the city Hall and were moved to Atlantic Beach Grade School. On August 10, 1959, 8.27 acres in Neptune Beach were purchased for the church site.
On October 4, 1959, the Church was officially constituted and on April 17, 1960, the groundbreaking for construction was held on Easter Sunday. The church unit was to consist of a Fellowship Hall, which was to be used temporarily as a sanctuary, a large kitchen, eight classrooms, a church office and a Pastor study. This building would become known as Dr. Shelby Wilson Hall.
On December 18, 1960, the first services were held in the new church. The large cross in front of the church, which is illuminated at night to serve as a beacon to all people of the beaches, was dedicated January 29, 1961.
In 1966, in order to accommodate the rapidly growing Church school, two additional buildings were built for classrooms. In January of 1975, due to the growth of the Church, groundbreaking for a new sanctuary was held and the building was completed in 1976. The stained glass windows in the sanctuary were given in memory and honor of loved ones by members of the congregation and were dedicated on October 3, 1993.
Rev. William Beebe joined the church in 2011.
